Core Acting Technique

Workshop Objective: To impart the knowledge, skills and habits necessary to "respond truthfully to an imaginary situation."  This is done by work on a monologue that can also be useful for subsequent auditions.  The goal is to have the student deliver the monologue as if they are talking to real person about something that is important to them.  Subsequent enrollments lead to more difficult monologues and scene work.

Wherever you hope to act, stage or screen,  you need  core acting techniques.

  •  script analysis
  •  acting warmups & preparation
  •  character development
  •  improvisation
  •  creating theater magic

And while developing the technical knowledge, we also work on putting the magic into our performances.  These are the same techniques taught in the professional workshops of Los Angeles and New York.

Each workshop consists warmups, group activities and one-on-one work.  Students are active about 60-75 percent of the time  No sitting around.  Just a little shooting the bull.

Every 8 weeks we'll hold a showcase and perform monologues and scenes for family and friends.  Many participants in this course have gone on to roles at local community theaters despite no previous training.  Others have gone on to professional careers.

New and Intermediate Actors should commit to the eight weeks for the first enrollment in the ongoing workshop.   In 8 weeks you should be equipped for minor roles in community theaters.  In 24 weeks you could (everyone's mileage varies) be ready for a major role, commercials and films.   It's not just a question of head knowledge, but of building  acting habits and developing skills.  It's not unlike dance where consistent use of basic skills leads to increased capabilities.

Please note: Core Acting involves physical activities.  Adjustments are made for various levels and limitations.  Please inform the instructor if you have physical limitations.

  • Please wear loose comfortable clothing, gym or dance shoes.

  • A water bottle is recommended.
